man on the moon certainly sounds cooler than first man in russian, first man also sounds silly in that context unless you add "on the moon" which would make the title too long. do you think they change them for no reason

Because if you're gonna market a movie about space exploration named 'First Man' in Russia the first association which springs up is Gagarin. At least this is my guess.
