I'm neutral to ruskies, sometimes dislike them, but quite like other Volga finns, though they are often too christcucked so they just don't consider themselves finno-ugric even or are embarassed by that fact.

Ancient Karelians circa 1100 AD were one of the three Finnish-speaking tribes and about half of Finns come from Karelian nutsacks.
Modern day people called Karelians in Russia are East Karelians east of the Ladoga who have been in cultural and linguistic isolation from Finns for 800 years so their language has become different but still extremely understandable comparable to Estonian.

The Karelian lands were cut in half in the treaty of Nötebörg in 1323 between Sweden and Novgorod.
West Karelians became Catholic-Lutherans paying taxes to Sweden and East Karelians Orthodox and that was the end of them being the same people.

Yes. My grandfather was Karelian evacuee, but he was from near lake Ladoga, that used to be Finland the "Finnish Karelians". I dont know about East Karelians, but we have a lot of them here too, they used to migrate here a lot during Soviet times and early 90's because Finnish government treated them as remigrants.

Most of the remigrants (at least 25k people) were Ingrian Finns, not East Karelians. They spoke mostly Finnish until the 1930s when Stalin did what he did. Their ancestors were Savonian people who moved to Ingria in the 1600s by the order of the king. And those Savonians were a mix of ancient Karelian and Tavastian peoples.

BTW, was your grandfather Orthodox Christian or Lutheran? My maternal grandmother was also an evacuee from the northern parts of Ladoga Karelia and she was Orthodox Christian and she pagisi karjalua.

Well, Erzyan language is highly affected by Russian when it comes to phonetics (there are only 3 differences, afaik), and there's a very large amount of loanwords. The core vocabulary is about as similar to Finnish as Russian is to Lithuanian.

Nobody knows what it was as they left no written records. The PCW horizon actually consisted of several cultures, some of which might be Uralic, and some most likely not.
