I think it's accually a good thing. It's only a small fine if you don't and you don't get fined if you never register. But what it does do is moderates politics because they don't have to convince people to come out and vote, which goes well with the party choosing the election date so we don't get 2 years of drawn out election campaigning.
And it means a lot of random meme parties get some seats and if you can't be fucked voting you can just draw a dick on the paper.
