It was intended to stop an autocrat from taking office. That was its purpose. Not a rural urban compensatory measure. It has never fullfilled that role. Electoral college also means candidates only campaign in swing states. That’s a bad thing. If you want it to be some anti mob mentality/city system you need to revamp it.
