About 1800s, Korea government started allowing people live in Ulleungdo(울릉도). And many people living in 전라도(south west place in Korea) moved there. 전라도 people who saw the Dokdo(Takeshima) called this island as '독섬'. '섬' means 'island' and '독' is dialect of '돌(rock)'. So this island became '독섬'. Then in 1900, Korea officially included this island and named '석도' which means 'rock island'. But in 1904, Japanese met Korean at 독도(Dokdo, Takeshima) and asked Korean the name of this island. Then Korean told the Japanese as '獨섬'. '獨' means 'Solitary' and its sound is 'Dok'. And by the time of 1904, '獨섬(독도)' finally became the official name. This is why it is translated as "Solitary Island".
