i don't care that much but even bare minimum maintenance annoys me. living in a single family house is awesome: no neighbors, lots of privacy, lots of space, your own garage, etc. but i hate yard work. lots of people love it though. good for them.

Its not always grass, sometimes hippies do other retarded stuff like giant gardens or whatever and in dry areas like AZ there's a lot of dirt, but grass is just the standard/boring option since it requires minimal maintenance other than cutting it once in a while.

Some of the nicer neighborhoods I've been to have community rules that ask homeowners to keep their lawn mowed. These people normally hire a lawn mowing service to do it regularly.

I think it makes them feel empowered and it's a show to their neighbors. Basically it tells everyone around that you got your shit togheter, even if it ain't so.
I have a little garden in front of my house, I'm growing avocado, mamey, lavender, chards, roses and a fig three. Now THOSE are crops, not just retarded grass.

In California cities just pay Mexicans and Guatemalans like $12 an hour to do this and time them at getting one block done every 30 minute.

I can't speak for the rest of America, I live in California and we're seen as "health nuts" because we think chugging soda and eating nothing but deep fried butter is bad.

It was a big meme pushed after WWII. Everyone had lots of money and was buying big houses with huge lawns. The natural lawns took care of themselves mostly, so some big companies decided to promote the idea of having a bunch of uniform bright green grass on a flat plane with nothing else in sight. This meant people spent tons on fertilizer, mowers, maybe some landscapers, sprinklers...
Anyway, their kids inherited this value. Gen X and beyond aren't rich enough on average to afford the fancy lawn lifestyle, so they don't care as much. Hence the boomers and their John Deeres meme.
