My pet theory is it's epigenetics. The more generations that pass, the more times new people's starting genes are told "there is enough food out there and so few diseases that you can afford to be this tall". I suspect that if it was studied that shorter people would turn out to have a smaller number of individual ancestors within the last ~100 years than taller people on average.
