I had this friend in high school, who was the son of Italian(Sicilian) immigrants. Both of his parents were fair-skinned, but he came out light brown for some reason. I always assumed it was some kind of birth defect because his facial features were otherwise white and he battled with cancer when he was 9(and was eventually cured). One time on a school trip, we went to a bar to have a beer and started chatting with a man who was around 65 years old, and apparently used to work as a high school history teacher. He asked my friend if he was of North African extraction--my friend replied that he was Sicilian. The retiree promptly pointed out that Sicily was under Arabic rule for 260 years, leaving him speechless and ashamed.

Italian american here. My father in brooklyn used to live across the street from the cousin of the guy who directed goodfellas. He was really dark (siclian probably) and my dad and his friends would often call him nigger behind his back because he looked different from most of the other italians.
