Can anybody offer any advice for myself learning Brazilian Portuguese? it's more complex than that, I disagree with the other user when he said you should avoid visiting Brazil because of that, but you do have to take care. people will know if you are a tourist, doesn't matter if you're on Ipanema or Copacabana. just make sure you stick with her and learn how people behave in these places before going out by yourself or to dangerous places

I apologise. I should have put "as long as you remain vigilant". Because I am acutely aware that nowhere in RJ is technically "safe". But certainly these places are much safer than others, to the point where hypervigilance is overcompensation. This is corroborated by people who have been there recently. When I'm in Los Angeles, I don't go anywhere near Skid Row. That common sense would do me well in RJ I think.
