It's not really the same thing, it may look the same but its origins, taste, and texture differ greatly.
Gyoza is the Japanese variant of the Chinese dumplings (Jiaozi), the carbs in the skin are usually wheat or rice, whilst piergoris are made with wheat only.
Jiaozi filling usually consists of pork, beef, or chicken along with a bit of vegetables, pierogi filling can contain potatoes and cheese as well.
Piergori dough are typically thicker than even wheat-based dumplings.
