hispanic isn't counted as a race on the census, it counts as an ethnicity. There are two options for ethnicity, hispanic or non-hispanic.

So for example, if you're a black immigrant from the Dominican Republic, you would check "black" under race, and then tick "hispanic" under ethnicity.

I doubt that most Iberians would identify as hispanic in the US. Technically the word just means anybody who is a native speaker of Spanish, but in practice it's just become a more formal term for a latino.

i think it's like
race = white
ethnicity = french

Sounds like it should be called culture or something

Race = white, black, yellow, brown
ethnicity = subgroup of that such as French or Italian

the only reason ethnicity is used at all on the census is to identify latinos, so you only have the option of hispanic or non-hispanic. It's the right thing to do since it's not actually a race.
