They are trying to do that now, but it's hard to convince farmers to plant their source of livelihood full of trees. It doesn't help that Coillte owns most of the forests and they only want to plant evergreens that make them timber money, not suitable for growing wildlife populations.

Had a look at /brit/ there and I honestly feel that just showing it to someone is the best argument against immigration you could give. I wonder how different our history would be if we were conquered by Rome. I'd expect us to unite five centuries early after the legions pull out, but it's just as possible we'd end up in a bad situation like what happened to the Britons.

Unironically not having Roman military technology is the single biggest reason our history went as badly as it did. Most of the rest of Europe (including *ngland) was mutted by the Roman Empire and its fall, but by consequence of that was always ruled by the people with the most advanced technology going.
The only time the Irish upped their game was when we defeated the Vikings, whose heavy-infantry focus and use of axes and chainmail set the standard in the two islands until the N*rm*ns steamrolled the Anglo-Saxons with the most advanced French technology.
