It’s gonna come back, maybe not literally, but in spirit. Russia will regain control over the near abroad and will form a thightly controlled geopolitical space. Maybe even go further and fprm a union with its pawns. The make or break here is Russia’s economy. Russia’s economy needs to grow big enough to be able to digest the near abroad with the post-soviet republics actually having a real economic incentive to integrate economically with Russia more again. If strong growth can be achieved then the rest will come automatically.

Devide the society through propaganda via various controlled sources (in US case it's media and universities) to make it fight against itself all while loosing the grip on the concept of individuals right on many freedoms (guns, right to own a business, what products to buy) which in turn would allow socialists to conquer more political ground. Meanwhile In the South Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia might well move closer and closer to Russia's sphere of influence, they are small and Russia might choose to do this, but Georgia and Russia went to war within the last 10 or so years. All of this region is dependent on Russia's relations with Turkey who are also NATO state

Besides, their economy is falling under Russo- Kazakh control. Tirkmenistan doesn’t matter. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have close ties woth the Russo-Kazakh clique. China’s strategic depth is achieved through their posession of the Ughyur land and Tibet. They desire economical ties with central asia but prefer ties with Russia as it has more resources. They are not in conflict over this.
Caucasus can’t resist Russian influence. This was partially demonstrated in the Georgian war.
Ukraine’s economy is failing still while that of Russia is economy. If something drastic doesn’t change they will lose this battle. Belarus is already in the pocket. No one cares about Moldovia. Russia won’t get to the Baltic.

The soviet economy was far from collapse it could have kept going under a hardline president for at least a few decades. Perestroika and Glasnost showed that the system was too fragile for major shocks but if everything was kept in place it could have kept going for quite a while. Although in stagnation.
