The villain was a frog, and transformed Kitaro into a frog. Kitaro should now have the power to turn others into a frog. Father offers to trade places, but Kitaro says no, but the father ends up becoming a frog anyways.
I should have kept reading (pic related). Annoying case of telling rather than showing. Not much visual storytelling going on here.

book recommendations also would be good. I tried looking for some, but I was having trouble finding modern japanese books. I found a website with books from the 1950s and earlier, but those were too old. Also, i figured the pictures may have the advantage of giving a little more context and making it just a touch easier to understand
