FAQ:
>How do I learn a language? What is the best way to learn one? How should I improve on certain aspects?
Ideally take a class, otherwise buy (torrent) a well-received textbook for your language, google any grammar you have trouble with and no matter what do lots of translation exercises but post an apu if you actually read this but I doubt it
>Will I learn a language by using Duolingo five minutes a day while taking a shit?
Nah
>Should I learn X to get a qt wife/gf (male) etc?
Fuck off you decadent dreamer
>What language should I learn

Trying to learn french because half of my family is french but my mom never taught me for some reason.
Is duolingo really that bad? I think it's quite helpful, and the forums are also pretty nice for getting help on something you're not clear with. Obviously I use other resources and practices in addition; I practice writing out info graphs, conjugating verbs, and using flashcards for memorization, and I'm slowly trying to make my way through some short stories. What else should I do?
Also, any recs for good textbooks?

For those of you who are interested in the /lang/ Discord, I'll keep trying to get a link, don't worry. It could take a while, but it's not impossible.

Attached: alri.png (173x92, 3K)

Duolingo is a tool that can be useful, the problem is mostly not with the program itself but the way people treat it. Just don't use it as your only resource and don't pace yourself with Duolingo alone, just go in do your daily shit leave and use other resources too.

The discord will kill the /lang/ general thread. I've seen it happen to other general threads.

I found Painless French very useful. I bought a handful of learn French books at a 2nd hand store but that one was the best by far.

People post on both platforms, one does not replace the other, like I explained here

Thanks, I'll check it out.

To be honest, these days I've been too lazy to open this general to help people, but if I had someone ping me on Discord asking for a correction I'd have gladly helped.
It's just that sometimes this place gets buried in the back of my mind and whatnot.
So I can't wait to get an invite link.

just came on the duolingo app

Did you just dick-tribute a fucking owl ?

kek

>Joseph vindt zingen leuk
Is valid
>Joseph vindt zingen lekker
Sounds strange.

I suppose that you might hear someone say:
>Wat kan Joseph lekker/ goed zingen
Lekker and goed carry the same positive charge and are interchangeable.

Do you have more questions?

Discord is for Chads ONLY.

Was the owl in his track suit, formal attire, or superhero cape?

English, Spanish and French
Would love to learn German as well but I can’t find any motivation for it (español tan poco)

how have you been studying english?

Español is easy if you already know french. German can be a bit hard, but once you learn how to use the declension cases, everything will flow.

vid plox

you're trying to get a link? is it not public?
why not make a real one then

Don’t ask me about it ...
The only thing I can tell you is that the best way I learnt English was dating a guy from an English speaking country
Gracias! Pero francés no es primero

What language should I learn?
I know english and spanish, thats it.
I feel I should go with Portuguese or French, because "Romance languages".
I also feel I should go with some moonrune language like Jap or Chinese (Mandarin or Cantontese)

Albeit I feel little inspiration for any of them.

inb4 Swedish
OP cant inb4

shall i go with the meme train and learn dutch?

you won't have the motivation if you let somebody pick for you.

everyone knows japanese girls are whores to white men
french, spoken in france, switzerland, luxembourg, belgium, quebec, and africa
YES

Oohh thanks.
Nothing so far. I'm currently focusing on my mid term exam for tomorrow morning so I'm just lurking around instead.

I want to hear opinions. And then choose by myself.

french. its easy cause you know spanish and much more international than german.

between Portuguese and French, the most potentially useful would be French
that's disregarding taste or affinity
I think if you're gonna go through Japanese or Chinese, it needs to pay off in some way, except if you're really into learning for its own sake
both have a very different society where you probably won't ever completely fit in, and you'll also never fully master them
also both look for native speaking teachers primarily, so it'll be hard to be hired as an english teacher, which of course is the majority of language teaching jobs

I considered french, but then I asked myself, why not Portuguese?
Is French that much more relevant than Portuguese? Aside from the old French colonies and France itself what else is there to it?

>Not learning Hungarian

do you plan on moving to brazil/portugal? my mexican friend says he can understand 80% of portguese so he doesn't feel motivated to learn it.

Like the other guy said you can also use French in Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, & Luxembourg. I know a guy that spent 5 years studying Arabic and went to Morocco and he couldn't understand anyone because their dialect of Arabic is like a different language. But they all spoke French.

I will think about it. I guees in the long run I could just end up learning both since Portuguese is just bad spanish.

>I think if you're gonna go through Japanese or Chinese, it needs to pay off in some way, except if you're really into learning for its own sake
I considered that as well.

>both have a very different society where you probably won't ever completely fit in,
Well never intended moving to Japan or China, but perhaps studying abroad for a couple years would be fine enough, thats the only reason I feel compelled to learn a language from that region.

>do you plan on moving to brazil/portugal
Not really. But I enjoy their music.

>he can understand 80% of portguese
They just have to speak slowly, and you can understand it as a Spanish speaker to an extent.
for that reason I considered it, It would probably take me a year or so to get fluent.

Why the fuck would anyone ever bother to learn Portuguese? I`d argue it`s only less useless than Romanian. Although it`s the most spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere, it`s not a good enough of a reason for anyone to learn it, except maybe if it`s someone's family or its romantic interest's native language. The majority of speakers are in Brazil, a country whose media has been sub-par for years. Peru, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay all have shot better movies than Brazil in a decade or so. Our country is doing bad economically and lately there has been a wave of xenophobia in Brazil (one of, if not, the country which most of its population is composed by immigrants). That just goes to show how ignorant and stupid the average Brazilian is. Apart from that, Brazil is becoming more and more evangelical. Fuck that. That's why many of us are fleeing to Portugal. Now, I can't tell you much about Portugal, since we never consume any media from them here, but it seems that Portugal has a way more positive prospect than Brazil. Regarding the language, although you're a Spanish native speaker, you will have problems regarding pronunciation. Portuguese is a more complex language than Spanish. We have more verb tenses and a more rich phonology, which, to this day I have never heard a Spanish native speaker sound completely natural. If even after having read this post, you're still not convinced, I just wish you luck with your learning and hope you won`t regret taking this decision afterwards.

HAHAAAAA THE PEPEFROG FROM Jow Forums

Hij zag dat ze uitdagend haar kin ophief en hem met donkere ogen
onvervaard aankeek. Ze was lang en slank, met een blonde krullenbos
die ooit een stijlvol kapsel was geweest. In haar mooie moirézijden jurk

It's not a pepe, fren.

"more relevant"

please, you have to ask yourself what you actually want. do you care about the francophone world, their literature or popculture? because if not then why the fuck is that an argument to you? should just learn what you like

What elements should I take into consideration if I want to make an atrociously hard conlang?
I'm interested in autistic grammar features from various hard languages around the world.

Have the verb on the end like korean.
It was quite tough to get used to.

its the same in german and in some cases in dutch

>shall i go with the meme train and learn dutch?
dutch is easy as fuck and is a good stepping stone to other languages
its also pretty fun to learn

agglutination, pitch accent / tones, cases, moods

There already is Ithkuil.

Where is the fucking discord

why is chinese so ugly
why did no one in 5000 years of history realize that making every word a monosyllable was retarded

Mao zhedong wanted to romanize Chinese but the CPP opposed it. Vietnamese & Korean got rid of Chinese characters. Japanese was only written in Hiragana before but they put back kanji again to make it more high class.

that's not true though, when the discord was active, /lang/ would get maybe 30 replies, and 60% of the time, the thread wouldn't even exist. It's definitely competing.

it's probably for the best that Discord requires an active admin of a server, because the current admin no learn languages anymore and won't make invites

but it's not only the writing, the writing is retarded sure, but it's classy and looks cool
it's the language itself, it wouldn't be nearly as exhasperating if every word didn't have a thousand homophones

What languages are the biggest waste of time to learn?

Attached: animals_hero_giraffe_1_0.jpg (1920x1080, 1.11M)

the ones you already know and the ones you'll never take seriously

anything that isn't russian, french, or Spanish, or maaaaybe Portuguese but probably not.

Those language have few who also know English so they're the only worthwhile choices that have more than like 50,000 speakers.

Attached: sammy.png (640x360, 315K)

>oh man cases are so hard XD
As a German you have no right to complain about that

conlangs

i have a good grasp on german cases but i of course don't know jackshit about other languages and would probably suck at, say, greek just like everybody else.

this, just look at the story about the guy who tried to teach his baby klingon and the kid just started ignoring him. even babbies can tell that conlangs are useless

not even tolkien was technically fluent, he didn’t invent enough vocabulary for it to be a functional language. the longest thing written in any form of elvish was a poem written in quenya

All those languages are spoken in third worlds countries where people already speak English not in Latin America but no sane person would ever want to have anything to do with that brown shithole also Russia but most people do not have any relation or meaningnful reason to learn that language.

Chinese is better than all the previously mentioned languages but still useless for anyone who isn't in a position to do business in china so it's a waste of time for most people

Arabic is fragmented in many mutually unningtelligible dialects and Modern Standard Arabic falls under the same category as Chinese.

Japanese is the only one worth learning but only if you are a hyper weeb who lives and breathes anime and japanese media.

There are no other languages worth considering other than the previously mentioned English is the only one worth learning and the best for all medias.
