My friend had a 9 hour surgery after his accident and spent 1 month in a hospital and 4 month in rehab after that.
The bill for the whole year was about 250,000€, covered by public health insurance.

insurance will fight that amount and settle for a smaller amount. hospitals overprice everything with the understanding that the final bill will be smaller

however if you don't have insurance you're out of luck. you can still negotiate it somewhat
