Proving it publicly would make him get ass fucked by governments in obvious ways. Just estate tax evasion alone in Australia at the time would have been a disaster.
Saying and demonstrating he might prove it privately helped him get support and resources to found NCHAIN without touching Satoshi coins (which would have major fallout) and partner with among others, SBI, no doubt only after signing with Satoshi keys in private like he did for Gavin.
He did the best he could game theory wise. Vitalik didn't consider the negative consequences of proving that he was Satoshi when he said what he said. His logic was good but only with the premise that proving he was Satoshi was the only goal of the game.
Ultimately, he might not be Satoshi(in which case he has the keys anyway or Gavin lied and he somehow fooled a bunch of other rich people), but if he was Satoshi, then he did what he could in that situation.
Remember, he got media after him before claiming to be satoshi. If he had simply denied it, he wouldn't have access to the resources he now does, and he would have even more people thinking he is Satoshi, including governments. They raided his house during the whole debacle.
Anyone who reads this post and disagrees is a brainlet.
