Unless our government tries to force functional tattoos like that of blood-types on us (again), probably won't gonna happen.

I tattoed myself when I was younger, dumber and on antidepressants on a visible part of my arm.
I fucking hate it, I don't use t-shirts anymore and during summer I sweat like a pig. Don't do it kid unless you are a tattoo artist.

I am heavily tattooed already, and I do tattoos for a living.

Is the "stereotype" of primarily low-IQ or uneducated people doing tattoos on their own body true in your opinion?

You mean people tattooing themselves or getting tattoos in general? In my experience, there are people from all walks of life that get tattooed. I have tattooed sailors, construction workers, lawyers, doctors, academics, and gangbangers. As far as people tattooing themselves, it’s almost always dumb kids who do it at home and they generally regret it. I have tattooed myself, but that was just for training purposes while doing my apprenticeship.

Well you just have to make sure you do your research. A lot of tattoos look like shit because they are done by people who do not know what they are doing, but if you are willing to travel and/or spend a lot of money, you can get some truly breathtaking works of original art.

No no I went to a studio, I meant that nobody influenced me to do it, no friends or relatives with tattoos, I walked myself right into it and now I regret it everyday.

There is something primal about the process of being tattooed. The oldest known human remains, Otzi the Iceman, wore crude tattoos. Mummies from all over the earth have been found to have tattoos of one form or another, from the Maori in New Zealand to the Scythian steppes of prehistory to medieval Japanese gangsters. The ritual of making ones body their own through a painful ritual is therapeutic and empowering and what appeals to me most about it is the fact that, unlike the high art world of multimillion dollar scams run by rich collectors and their art dealers, this form of art that has real meaning to regular middle class people.

Kind of sad that these kind of tattoos are not done or have the old meanings in Asia, Europe and parts of the New World anymore, if you think about how tattooed Japanese for example are barred from entering public baths and so on desu.

It is sad, but in Japan’s case it makes sense. Japanese tattooing started out as a criminal punishment. In the old days, if a Japanese was caught stealing for instance, they would have the Kanjii for “Thief” tattooed on their face as a mark of shame. Eventually this led to the criminal underworld adopting elaborate tattoos to signal their allegiances and lifestyle. During gambling matches between Yakuza, it was customary for all parties at the game to strip down to loincloths so that those at the table could see their gang affiliations and their status within those gangs. This stigma persists today, though the western fascination with tattoos has started to filter back into Japanese pop culture.

Most people get tattoos as a rite of passage. There is something to be said for voluntarily submitting oneself to a painful process of physical transformation. I agree that a lot of women get a lot of stupid tattoos, but most people of any gender are fucking retards anyway.

I don’t think most people know why they do what they do most of the time, but that doesn’t mean they have no reason. I have been doing it for years, and whether people think they are going through a rite of passage or not, they are effectively doing just that. They are submitting themselves to a voluntary, painful ritual to transform their bodies. Especially 18 year old get tattooed to exercise their newfound physical autonomy in the world of adults. Often people get tattooed as a way to memorialize their dead, or just a time in their life that they feel deserves to be remembered.

Then again, some people (like myself) just get them because they look super cool
