Honestly now. Had a woman tell me that just yesterday. Literally "I'm Irish and Cherokee". Glad I never caught this bug. That fact alone makes me think he never got a test done, and I also wouldn't be surprised in the least if he identifies as Irish. Not "Irish American", not "Irish-descended", just "Irish".

they assimilated, intermixed, and some of them were never pushed westward so it's actually quite feasible for someone to have cherokee ancestry especially if they're from that part of the country
oddly though I think the people most likely to have some and be unaware of it is New Englanders as some tribes were mostly assimilated

Because it's perfectly acceptable to be proud of being "German" or "Irish" but if you say you're proud of being a white American then you're a nazi. Hence you have people who, when searching for an acceptable ethnic identity, attach themselves to an amalgam of places they've never been and cultures they know nothing about because the alternatives are castigation or deracination.
