Where's that from? It seems like all the polls were done before Peter "dead knacker stacker" Casey made his comments.

Not been an /éire/ regular for a good while: is this something usually done? Posting the occasional piece of vocabulary for Gaeilge? Would definitely be a good way to help with the language learning, however small.

It's just some fucker who thinks it's funny to force his "meme". He'll probably reply with that picture of your man looking at a sheet of paper soon.

I'd think the traveler comments are a big part of why he did as well as he did: I was actually surprised there's any love at all in the country for the fuckers.

I see.

Probably, that's what is scaring them

Probably. It seems like being boring is the worst thing you can be in politics these days, being edgy or controversial will win over a good chunk of the voterbase who think you're being "honest".

As if we didn't import enough of America's shit.
This was the first time I've seen people appear to get properly worked up over a presidential election in this country, and it was surreal.
I don't know, maybe I just wasn't paying attention and it was always like this, but it just seems like we were trying to imitate the yanks with this one.

Anyone else's power go?

Attached: 1539798114024.gif (540x501, 1.56M)

From what I've read, his comments about social welfare cheats held some sway too.

>being edgy or controversial will win over a good chunk of the voterbase who think you're being "honest".
Casey didn't say anything edgy or inaccurate though. You're buying into the left's attempts to undermine him because they fear that Casey or somebody like him might give voice to people that they have managed to successfully suppress for years.

Did anybody else think that RTÉ's 9pm News report on Casey's result was quite biased? They had a statement from a representative of Pavee Point before they even had a soundbite from Casey.

Casey is left and maybe far left. His entire campaign was built on the values of globalism and immigration but it seems nobody paid attention until he mentioned the travelers.

Is that tonight? I thought it was tomorrow night. Not that it makes a difference either way.

I shall use it to write a letter to Juncker to thank him for his plans to free us from the menace that is daylight saving. And if there's room on the page, ask him why his son hasn't been shitposting lately.

The Left in Ireland won't accept him as one of their own though, because they have a very narrow definition of what it means to be left wing.

>From what I've read, his comments about social welfare cheats held some sway too.
Blaming welfare frauds was the same thing Varadkar was doing not long ago but remember populism is bad.

Nobody in politics will accept him. Today in the same interview he described himself as both a socialist and a capitalist within the space of a minute.
He's a populist millionaire who thinks he has divine right to rule everything and whatever he says will be accepted by the little people.

>He's a populist millionaire who thinks he has divine right to rule everything and whatever he says will be accepted by the little people.
Where the hell did you get that impression? That's the sort of nonsense you'd hear from some left wing talking head on Twitter.

Does your family celebrate Halloween?

Even as a child, Halloween wasn't really a thing in our house. I think that's common enough for people living outside of urban areas.

Attached: 1526519093820.png (1000x1000, 533K)

What job do you hope to get with that?

Because he only started playing it up halfway through the campaign after he stumbled upon a traveler comment on an obscure podcast and realised it was gaining him supporters.
He played the electorate to get his expenses back realising he was heading for last place otherwise. A calculated business decision.

it's anti-Irish not to celebrate Halloween

I plan to become an actuary. I already have exemptions for some of the exams under my belt

Just banter lad

>He's a populist
I think you're taking the wrong angle on this.
Of course he's populist, he's trying to get elected to a position that all it requires is being liked, just like all the other candidates.

Do you think his remarks were calculated? I'm not sure. His comments on welfare and travellers could have easily blown up in his face since he's a millionaire businessman who doesn't pay taxes here. He could have been heavily taken to task about them and vilified in the media or by people, much like Michael D was who was much loved until his expenses came up.
At the end of the day he articulated criticism that resonated with a lot of people, and acted in a way that is less manufactured and diplomatic that most people are used to seeing from politicians or his opponents and that appealed to people, especially people wanting to take a swipe at what they view as the current establishment and state of affairs. I think he was easily the least political savvy of all his opponents and seemed a bit at sea after making those comments.
I think you just don't like him because you perceive him and his support as right wing.

But how can one actually celebrate Halloween? Especially as an adult. All I can think of is posting cute anime girls in Halloween outfits.

Trick-or-treaters stopped coming to our house after our dog pinned one against a wall because the mask spooked him. He didn't bite or anything but it scared the hell out of the kid.
As for in the house, I remember playing a lot of traditional party games when I was young. We steadily stopped decorating the house as years went by. When I was a child, our Halloween decorations were on par with Christmas. While now we only bring out a pumpkin shaped candle holder, without a candle.

>While now we only bring out a pumpkin shaped candle holder, without a candle.
I don't know why, but that's an incredibly tragic image in my head.

But it sounds like your family once took Halloween really seriously. I've never even seen a trick-or-treater in real life. For years I thought that they were an American-only thing.

Attached: 1521362471899.png (600x799, 444K)

You didn't trick or treat yourself?

Attached: 1533241604249.jpg (540x540, 34K)

I think they were calculated since he only sprung them after he was failing badly in the polls. If the initial opinion polls showed him at 15% instead of 1% I think we'd have never seen any sort of controversy from him.
He was a man with nothing to lose and acted accordingly.

I don't have any sort of strong personal opinion on him. He was the winner of the cripple race for 2nd place behind Michael D in a weak field of candidates which the electorate responded to with a low turnout.
Not much more to say or think on him than that since I don't foresee a millionaire who doesn't primarily live in this country wanting a constituency seat in Donegal. There's not much power or reputation to be gained from that.

I don't think he's right wing or even political at all. I think he's a businessman who weighs up opportunities versus outcome for his personal gain.

wtf that was my question

Nope.

Attached: 1536070913128.png (648x906, 675K)

Yes, I have it on PS4.

I think the yanks have well and truly stolen Halloween from us now.

Trick or treating and bonfires were common where I grew up. Not much else happened other than eating barmbrack or watching the Den halloween specials.

Attached: 1533309712415.png (514x480, 384K)

Then you missed out. I thought everyone went trick or treating as a child.

It was great craic walking about with friends and collecting sweets and either getting up to mischief or having a laugh with the people who came to the door. Then going to a friends place for fireworks and a bonfire while generally just acting the maggot.

>I don't know why, but that's an incredibly tragic image in my head
It has a top on so it doesn't look weird without it. But yes, very tragic.

>it sounds like your family once took Halloween really seriously
Not more than the average family in the area.

>I've never even seen a trick-or-treater in real life. For years I thought that they were an American-only thing
Ireland's narrow and often dangerous country roads make for poor trick or treating conditions. Odds are that many kids in the country are driven from house to house. Especially since sparse housing is also an issue.
I guess it caught on at different times in different parts of the country. My mother said that growing up Halloween was only used as an excuse for young lads to throw turnips at your door really loudly to frighten you. I don't she heard of the modern Americanised form until the late 80's or early 90's.
Makes me wonder if it wasn't for greedy diaspora children would Halloween here fade away like Wren's Day?

>dad brings me trick or treating
>takes me on a tour of every pub in the parish
>make around €80 in cash along with Taytos and peanuts
'Twas a wonderful time.

Attached: 1540074539641.jpg (720x838, 122K)

>Odds are that many kids in the country are driven from house to house
>driving your children around so that they can beg for sweets from your neighbours
It certainly lacks the charm of door to door trick-or-treating.

>Makes me wonder if it wasn't for greedy diaspora children would Halloween here fade away like Wren's Day?
Probably. Only the commercialised American variant exists in Ireland these days. Most people don't even seem to know that it's originally an Irish thing.

Anyone else remember fucking around with fireworks in school? We used to throw bangers at each other during lunch and at the bus stop

Attached: 1522873639503.png (508x534, 253K)

>make around €80 in cash along with Taytos and peanuts
I remember going to the door of some houses sometimes and they had no sweets so they gave us like 20p coins.

>eating barmbrack
>tfw hoping you wouldn't get the ring so you wouldn't be made fun of

>the Den halloween specials
Those used to legitimately spook me out.

>It certainly lacks the charm of door to door trick-or-treating
It wasn't great. Door to door was far better, even if it was just down a particularly populated country road.

I didn't handle more than snaps at that age. Did none of your teachers care?

Attached: 1540669708249.jpg (1884x1186, 233K)

>or watching the Den halloween specials.
I remember these existing, but not the content.

Attached: 1534128360927.jpg (884x1157, 348K)

And then it was deco's turn.

Attached: la-0412-pin01.jpg (843x615, 111K)

And Deco was never seen again.

What did getting the ring mean symbolically? For me it was more a matter of hoping I didn't get it to prevent choking or breaking my teeth.

>Most people don't even seem to know that it's originally an Irish thing.
You're thought it in school though?

A little bit. I bought them at the ploughing one year, a woman with a pram actually came up to us and removed the blanket on it and it was just full of fireworks lol and a friend decided to fire a rocket at me I had to dodge and it exploded under a car. We legged it.

Attached: 1535658430545.jpg (531x717, 298K)

Possibly to do with Ted or Podge. I have some memories but may be mixing them up with christmas specials.

Neither was his safety video which was shown to children in Irish schools, it's now lost media.

>Did none of your teachers care?
They did, if you were caught with fireworks then you got in shit. That's why we did it at lunch away from the school grounds and at the bus stop which was outside the school gate and not monitored by any staff

lel

>You're thought it in school though?
I don't remember.

>I bought them at the ploughing one year,
I thought they were for throwing at townies in the townie cage?

How did vendors at the Ploughing manage to skirt the fireworks sale restrictions though?

Attached: 1539391388066.jpg (1000x1500, 935K)

I liked the ring the best since it meant you'd find love and could wear it.

They had Goosebumps ominbuses that were legitimately scary. I think I'm still traumatized.

Attached: 1535655017033.png (296x333, 122K)

>I liked the ring the best since it meant you'd find love
Why would the ring lie?

Presumably we all agree this was the best goosebumps book?

>Irish general
>In English

>I didn't handle more than snaps at that age.
Some kids were throwing them at people walking by on the street the other day.

I heard them from a mile away and knew what they were but they still managed to scare me lol

It's a general for Irish people to communicate however they wish. Hopefully that cleared up any confusion.

>How did vendors at the Ploughing manage to skirt the fireworks sale restrictions though?
By putting them in a pram and pretending they were babies.

I haven't seen them there recently but it used to be awash with them. It's why a lot of people went apparently.

I was walking my dog once and I stepped on one left on the road. I'm not which one of us was more shocked.

>for Irish people to communicate however they wish
>no one's posting in braille
Awful intolerant this thread is to those with disabilities.

Really? That sounds like a Traveller trick.

Blind people have super hearing, so they can hear what keys we press and therefore know what has been posted.

What time is it right now? I'm very confused.

You're thinking of Podge and Rodge A Scare At Bedtime

They were pretty good, much better than their talkshow, I had volume 1 and 2 on cassette

I still remember most of the stories
