It’s officially football in Australia, however there are 3 other codes of football and depending wether you’re in Sydney or Melbourne football/footy will mean different things. When I am asked here what I played at home I say football which people mistake for rugby union because I am Australian. I played soccer growing up but it’s called football here.

Fun fact: "Soccer" comes from when the Americans called it "association football", which they shortened to "soc football", and then to "soccer".
