>Deodoro wasn't exactly beloved by people so he didn't finish his mandate, leaving Floriano Peixoto in charge instead, who then solved the "problem" of a public opinion by simply punishing whoever decided to oppose to him ideologically
>besides Brazil being now technically a democracy, there was this huge lobby for the alternation of power between two major oligarchies, the farm owners of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, which had an indirect control over who the population would vote for not only by their influence but also by using force, as the voting system was flawed enough for them to get away with this kind of behavior
