I was in an economics class today and the professor told that old joke about Americans being monolingual ("What you do call someone who knows two languages? Bilingual. What is someone who knows one language? American"). I joked in turn that "everyone worth talking to" in foreign countries already knew English, so we didn't need any other languages. The room went "ooooh" after that. Some landwhale asked "Only the rich people know, are they the only ones worth talking to?" and I said, "Well, yes, obviously." It was supposed to be a joke based on absurdity but I think the Chinese, Greek, Turkish, Mexican, and Indian exchange students in that class think I'm xenophobic/chauvinistic now.

I had a French economics teacher in 2016 that didn't believe in the concept of money, and said the world would be better without it. I asked her how society would function, and she said that people would just give away things to people that wanted them. We spent forty minutes arguing about this and she refused to see any common sense. I didn't go to any more of her classes.
