Rice is a blessing and a curse
its a blessing because it has such massively high yield and you can live for a long time on pretty much just rice.
BUT its also very hard to farm and requires a lot of water meaning you need a higher oppressive hierarchy and millions of serfs to make it viable
One family farming their own private field as with European yeoman farmers is not a possibility.
high yield also leads to huge populations and entrenched serfdom
