It's honestly not that weird, Asians didn't invent oil painting and worked with water paint so their paintings was really limited. When the europeans brought them oil paintings it blew their minds because they had never seen depth and reflections in a painting before. It literally looked like magic to them.
Not entirely true, once Japan was "discovered" for culture exchange in the latter part of the 1800's they were kind of trendy for a while. I think their presence at the world fair in Paris 1867, which was the biggest one yet and the first where the exotic japanese culture was exhibited, was the most important part. It started a trend called "Janponism", where painters took inspiration from japanese artistic style. The OG weebs were french painters and art connoisseurs in the 1800's.
