Hence "socially liberal". That means that the government simply allows everyone to do as they please as long as they don't harm others. Libertarians/liberals hold the position that morality is not the domain of the government. That doesn't mean it's not the domain of non-state institutions like churches, families or philosophical schools of thought though.

Bastiat put it best: when liberals declare they don't want the government to do something, socialists interpret it as if liberals don't want it happening at all. When liberals say they don't want a state religion, socialists think they're against religion. When liberals say they don't want the state to regulate education, socialists think it means they don't want education at all. When liberals say they don't want the state to raise crops, socialists think it means they don't want anyone to eat.
