>Karayuki-san (唐行きさん, literally meaning "Ms. Gone Abroad") were Japanese women who traveled to or were trafficked to East Asia, Southeast Asia, Manchuria, Siberia and as far as San Francisco in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century to work as prostitutes, courtesans and geisha.[1] In the 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a network of Japanese prostitutes being trafficked across Asia, in countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and British India, in what was then known as the ’Yellow Slave Traffic’.[2]

唐 has two meanings: in the narrow one it's china as you say, deriving from tang dynasty; and the other is foreign countries in general as a collective term. this is why we use the word 毛唐 (ketou: 毛 (hairy) 唐 (foreigner)) to refer to whites. and in this case the latter is correct.
anyway, it's not really a big deal. they were poor peasant girls, which were subject to human trafficking and sexual exploitation as a result anywhere in the world, and some of them were sold to foreign brothels.
most karayuki-san in the 19th century died in their destinations, so it's highly unlikely that they came back to japan to give birth to mixed children.
