Well it requires a lot of luck and high grades. Medicine in the Netherlands is very hard to get into since every tryhard student in all of Europe applies for it. Dutch universities are affordable and have a good standing so studies like medicine in particular are full of foreigners.
I can recall out of my class the best 10 students (8 of them girls) applied for medicine and only 2 got in.

Medicine students are stereotyped over here as being extremely hard working and very good at learning (since it is just a lot of learning). But also crazies full of problems like fear of failure

Well here in Italy it's normal to get into medicine and many girls study it too. It's not easy but everyone who's not retarded can get access the course if he studies for the test, I don't see what the fuss is about an ok looking girl studying medicine. When I pass near the medicine university it's often full of girls and among them there are quite a lot of cute ones as in every other university where there is a significant number of females.

Like I said, medicine is a big deal in the Netherlands because it's the only studies that you cannot just get into. And heaps of tryhard European students (from all over Europe) apply for every medicine studies in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, etc and just hope to get accepted into a single one.
Yes there is a lottery but it's not as straight forward as that. I think for example cum laude highschool students are instantly accepted and the rest has to play the lottery against all of Europe.

Update: they got rid of the lottery and now made it so you have to take an extra test so foreign students have to physically come to the Netherlands if they want to apply to medicine.
And cum laude students will get instant acces.
