How can we make discussion better in your opinion?
Fewer generals and more serious discussion.
Ok well that will not happen. Thank you for the advice though!

Nice.
Whenever I hear Finnish I immediately understand Tolkien's decision to use it as inspiration for his Elvish tongue: it's truly otherworldly. Mysterious Finno-Ugric soul.
Dont invite the 4kanker hordes you crossposter
>it's truly otherworldly
Yeah well it isn't Indo-European yet it shares the alphabet thanks to Swedish influence before written language was invented in Finland so the non-Germanic expressions and phonetics are fit into the Greek alphabet with a Germanic twist. It's unique, you got that right, but what I think makes it stand out to Anglos etc. is that it's not COMPLETELY different like Asian languages.
Coincidence or not, even our oldest words fit nicely into the Greek alphabet. And it's a bit silly since from our point of view we speak the Alphabet "cleanly" where as most languages don't. In Finnish a letter is a letter is a letter. It doesn't matter whether it's the first or last letter of a word, it's pronounced the same, every time. Spelling bees aren't a thing because Finnish is just letters read out in sequence so there would be no challenge.
At the risk of overstaying my welcome as the fun fact guy the reason for this is probably that Finnish had such old roots as a spoken language with no written form, so the written form just kinda formed according to the phones. Languages deriving from Latin for example have been co-developing with the written form for about 2000 years. Finnish less than 200.
he mad

Thank you for sharing. I wonder, did a similar thing occur to those Finno-Ugric languages spoken by indigenous Finnic and Ugric peoples of regions now within the Russian Federation? That is, did they adopt cyrillic or latin scripts and thus develop a highly regular orthography?

Karelian is officially a language, but it's like if you classified deep south redneck drawl as separate from English.

>That is, did they adopt cyrillic or latin scripts
Latin was the natural development since they would read Finnish texts in the Grand Duchy of Finland (1809-1917) but you have to understand nothing in this region is "natural" since the USSR shifted populations around and had very purposeful public education system and newspapers which tried to Russianize the Karelians so modern Karelian is written with letters found in Eatern Europe (though no cyrillic)
>and thus develop a highly regular orthography?
No, it's very irregular. There's pre-war "pure" Karelian, modern Karelian, bastardization with Russian influence etc. I think the Russians have a body of government these days to standardize the language but it's kind of fundamental to the Finno-Karelian heritage to resists Russian governmental bodies so it's a whole mess.
I wish one day to go to hësburger
youtu.be
let's go together fren
You really shouldn't. Only the poorest country folk who literally have one fast food restaurant in their town eat Hesburger. It's like the 82th best burger joint in Helsinki.
then what is number 1?!
Some good ones:
burgerjoint.fi
bites.fi
friendsandbrgrs.com
bann all americans
Far out countryside does not have McDonalds and you can't really say if Hesburger is better or worse, it's just different.
The fact that you're instinctively comparing it to McD only cements my argument. There's three burger places better than McD or Hese within 300 meter walking distance of my house.
Only country folk who have to go to a gas station to get warm food after 9PM eat Hese.
Sure, if you don't like the grease and cheese served to you 24h at Macca's you can go for the steamed bun with nothing but mayo and lettuce. Or you could just not go to either one.
Can you tell me about life in the Finnish countryside? Is it cozy? Do you all have wood stoves and pet otters like the old man from this video?
>Can you tell me about life in the Finnish countryside?
No I've never lived outside of Kehä I except for abroad
>Is it cozy?
No
>Do you all have wood stoves and pet otters like the old man from this video?
Probably not. It's just deteriorating small houses, 70s government housing and dying businesses.
