During olympics when soviet was still a thing the soviet team was sponsored by adidas and wore adidas tracksuits all the time.
So because it was the choice of clothes for the national champions of Soviet everyone wanted it too, when the wall fell and free trade became available everyone bought adidas because it was cheap and available
