they were complaining to the council with a letter writing campaign. at the end of the day it's up to that council to approve new buildings in central areas.
How on earth could anyone object to that style as "regressive"? It's beautiful. I'm an art deco man myself, but that definitely has a nice aesthetic.

In the Netherlands there's an architectural marvel named 'Almere' you should check out if you feel like gouging your eyes out.
