I don't know how it is in other countries, but what you usually see a security guard wielding here is normally pepper spray or something. They all took self defense classes too and are usually pretty fit themselves.

They aren't always armed but many are, it's pretty variable.

But why? Places that need armed guards like airports are usually guarded by the police.

I'm not asking why a security guard would guard something, I'm asking why he needs a gun to do so. I don't know about the function of security guards in the US but in here they are usually there to solve conflicts in clubs or patrol private property like construction sites so noone goes there and gets himself injured (or steals shit). None of these tasks would require that you have a gun at your disposal.

Usually when people get told by a security guard to go away, they do.
Of course, if push comes to shove you can simply call the police since the guy is trespassing. In any first world country, the police will be there in like 10-15 minutes if they have nothing better to do (which they usually don't since it's probably like 2 in the morning and noone works at the site at that time).
Why you would shoot someone for trespassing or even threaten to shoot him is beyond me.
