House prices in Silicon Valley are absolutely absurd. I am building my own business while I work for a startup taking home about 145k a year so that once that business has scaled, I can move back out of the country. I'm not an American citizen so it will be easy to set up shop in say Singapore, Hong Kong, and have another residence elsewhere once I've saved.
