FAQ: >How do I learn a language? What is the best way to learn one? How should I improve on certain aspects? Ideally take a class, otherwise buy (torrent) a well-received textbook for your language, google any grammar you have trouble with and no matter what do lots of translation exercises but post an apu if you actually read this but I doubt it >Will I learn a language by using Duolingo five minutes a day while taking a shit depends how many shits >I'm going to use Duolingo anyway If on your phone, use the mobile site and NOT the app; the latter lacks many important features and doesn't let you turn the word bank off which should always be off. In addition don't copy-paste or memorize answers for the sake of completing lessons, as above, google anything you don't understand >Should I learn X to get a qt wife/gf (male) etc? No >Should I learn X because of my heritage learn Y instead
>What language should I learn Faroese >I just want something easy and somewhat useful Czech >I want a language that's useful and fun but not too hard Turkish >I want a language that's useful and embrace a challenge Hakka

Need to stop worrying about the why and just try to understand that there is no universal rules to language Even if it seems arbitrary and retarded

I wanted to learn Estonian before I decided to learn Lithuanian. I still do wish to learn it but I am currently still working on Lithuanian and Polish and still having fun so...hopefully one day.
>working on Polish >spending a nice sum of time familiarizing myself with the usage of 'by, aby, żeby'
kind of strange to wrap my brain around but starting to get a hang of it. I have read in some places that 'aby' and 'żeby' are almost interchangable but noone would give you too much shit if you just use the 'żeby' form. Is this correct?
Owen Perez
You did make sure to spend/plan for at least an hour of language study today, right user?
Dominic Jackson
What's your favorite way to go about learning a language and what do you find the most efficient? Do you just keep translating text or have specific exercises?

Do you mean diacritics/Harakat? Why would anyone use that lmao.

Should I learn Spanish, lads? Pretty confident about passing the Japanese N1 test this year and the appeal of knowing Japanese is gone.

how do i not get anxious when wanting to view new content in the language i'm learning i'll just procrastinate and put it off because i feel worried about it for some reason
You know, you could have a look at the resources linked in the OP instead of just (You)ing yourself with anime grills.
I don't know the answer to your question, so I say you're gonna have to examine the material yourself, unless someone also learning Standard Arabic swoops in and provides you with what you need. Thread is pretty dead at these hours though.
Brody Green
Force yourself to study at least five minutes a day, no exceptions. If you still can't stand doing so after five, try again later/the next day
Carson Thompson
This post gave me hope. Not because of the advice but because I do the same thing with 30 Minutes as bare minimum and one hours as desirable minimum. Some of you guys have it worse than I it seems kek
"Getting started is the hardest part" isn't a meme
Easton Butler
Due to some real life thing I'm learning 2 languages at the same time and I fully agree that getting started takes a long while. Once you've got a solid fundament it's kinda like a walk in the park though, depending on the language.
Luis Hall
I mean getting started learning for the day
Adrian Green
Oh, now that's silly. Just start with vocab while you're taking a morning shit and then go from there. Shouldn't be that hard.
>English speaking countries don't have to learn English as a second language Woah, what a genius
Jayden Cooper
Set timer for five minutes and read what you can. When it goes off stop and take a break. Repeat. Getting started with a task can be overwhelming so it helps if you tackle it a little at a time.
Colton Nelson
What's the most painful but effective method of learning a language?
Parker Bailey
To start
Jayden Ramirez
1% is a lot though.
Imagine having a vocab of 3500 in your TL... you'd have to learn 35 words to improve 1%
Eli Adams
I doubt any human could learn 35 words a day unless they're doing full immersion
Adrian Long
What if I try to translate the bible? Man, learning a new language is so boring. I don't even know how I learned English anymore.
> Hvis så han ikke _____ mulighet til selv å bli konge? > Kommer (?) du med det? > Hvis Kongs Sverres arve dor med Håkon Håkonsson, med en av dem som arve tronen. ???
Joshua Turner
When you read your native language or english you don't read letter by letter but just look at the overall form of the word, that's why in most cases we can still read our native language when the first and last letters are correct and the letter inbetween are scrambeled. So just learn the words as a whole instead of letter by letter
John Price
I would at least use something written in normal speech. Learn your language's grammar before trying anything though
Adrian James
Even for full immersion that's excessive and terrible for retention
Jaxson Foster
I was joking, dudes but I read about this guy who did stuff like that
from another place: >Mezzofanti read a huge amount of books in the language he was learning. He read books that he already knew in another language and could translate them over. He also made use of dictionaries, grammar books, and polyglot bibles.
Chase Baker

Seriously, what’s with Spanish? It looks so artificial and robotic, like no human could actually naturally speak. The fact that the only association I make with it is garbage YouTube videos doesn’t help, and I have read Don Quixote, so it’s not like I’m clueless about the culture.
James Nelson
- Get accepted into a kindergarten to Year 12 school that teaches your target language. - Get to learn the language the natural way - Wait 12-13 years while getting good marks - Bobs your uncle, you are now fluent in your target language at a high school grad level.
Let me rephrase: get accepted in a K-12 school that teaches IN your target language, i.e. in the country where the language is the official one.
Ryan Flores
No, you need to talk to people. Learning from courses, grammar exercises, dictionaries etc are good for building up your lexicon, but that's like a theory component. You need to put it into practice, by listening and speaking with people. And between the times when you're not talking to people who speak your target language, do reading, writing, join a group chat and start responding to messages with some of your own, like what you're doing now in English.
It isn't that either. It's different in Arabic. For example, علم(ع ل م) can mean any of the following: Flag(عَلَمْ), Knowledge(عِلمْ), "was taught"(عُلّمْ) or "he/she knew"(عَلَمَ) in Modern Standard Arabic.
The only way you can figure out what علم means without context is using these small diacritics/marks which no one even uses. I doubt people in MENA even know that their keyboards can type these diacritics.

So is this thread as dead as Volapuk?
Jaxson Wood
So apparently after a long time without needing it I might be forced to take some sort of test to validate my English. So what can you tell me about those TOEFL/TOEIC tests anons? Aside from them being stupidly expensive for what they're worth and for expiring in a flash. I suppose TOEIC is more preferred if I want something for my CV? Or should I go for the TOEFL variant? Are they even different? There seem to be quite a few forms the test can take so I'm unsure.
I've had a cold this last week, didn't really do much learning. good thing I got the flu shot

Came here to help myself with learning spanish. I was actually semi-fluent as a very young kid but never kept the habit, my pronunciation is still pretty good though.

For online, Duolingo(Very useful) and other podcasty or YouTube type videos can help. I also go to weekly Irish classes, free ones scattered throughout Northern Ireland where I live.

Being an American there are tons of Spanish speaking people here, so it would be pretty cool to be able to understand/talk to them.
Asher Diaz
Repeatedly kill yourself until you eventually get reincarnated as native speaker
Levi Price
Same for me. I really like the consistency Spanish has to it also.
Robert Mitchell
You're assuming reincarnation happens. We don't have any evidence to suppose it does.
Jose Gonzalez
Another flaw in your method is that after I kill myself the first time I won't remember the original plan when I reincarnate.
Carson Sanders
What's the "conditional" in "conditional sentences" mean?
No, I mean to ask why is it called that, not what is it.
Angel Perez
Im thinking about learning another romance language, I know french because Im a Québecois but which one should I learn im thinking about either spanish or italian.
Landon Lee
Because whether B is true is conditional on A being true. Being motivated is nice and can help you through some more difficult shit, like starting out. But motivation has a tendency do fluctuate. What you really need long-term is discipline. Shit.
Austin King
>Conditional sentences are sentences expressing factual implications, or hypothetical situations and their consequences.
>They are so called because the validity of the main clause of the sentence is conditional on the existence of certain circumstances, which may be expressed in a dependent clause or may be understood from the context.
Samuel Rivera
Can you trivialize it for me? I can't understand anything at all. I'm sorry.
Juan Young
It is a condition. Like when people say 'Under one condition'
Mission Objective (condition given to you): Secure the Red Key Card
Once done, you will be given a new mission.
Complete the CONDITION, you will gain the RESULT of getting another mission. If you do not meet the CONDITION, then the RESULT will not happen.
Robert Carter
conditional = Limited by a condition (điều kiện) conditional = Stating that one sentence is true if another is.
in "if I drink coffee at night, I don't sleep well"
"I don't sleep well" happens if the condition of "I drink coffee at night" happens
"I drink coffee at night" is the condition for "I don't sleep well" to happen
I hope "điều kiện" is the correct translation for condition kek

Can someone explain me why the verb "buy" goes with gerund in this phrase? which is the grammatical rule who applies here:
He brought this bussiness man who's interested in buying cheese
