Most French people are of Celtic extraction, and red hair is common among Germanic populations, so I don't see why not.

Historically, most celts were described as having blonde hair. The red hair must come from another. I mean, it's also weird that the celtic homeland (likely central europe) has so few gingers.

I think the genes for ginger hair might be pre-Indo-European, thus they won't correlate with Celts or other later invaders.

Red probably includes people with hairs that are as much or more brown or blonde than red. That's what my own is like, have been described as having all three hair colours by different people at different times.
