Hes right.
The median annual wage for a trucker that works for a private fleet, such as a truck driver employed by Walmart, is $73,000, according to ATA. The Labor Department pegs the median annual salary for all truck drivers at around $40,000. But it isn't an easy job to fill. There's 1.6 million truck drivers in America.
>become a millionaire if you never spend money for 20 years
Thinking
it's not an easy job to fill because of the competition?
It'd be better to work on an offshore rig than be a truck driver.
>Of those, about 750,000 are "for hire" truckers, meaning they work for a truck company that's hired by another company, such as a grocery chain, to deliver its product. These truckers are sometimes on the road for 10 days at a time before coming home, Costello says.
>Costello admits that the industry is having the toughest time retaining young workers. Trucking companies also have a tough time recruiting women, who have become a larger part of the workforce than in previous generations.
>To qualify, truckers have to be 21, they must a commercial trucking license and pass a background check and drug test. Those requirements haven't changed in years, experts say.
You need money to go to school and you need an official residence to even register. Most jobs handle pay through direct deposit now which requires a bank account but a bank account requires an existing balance and an address for yourself which obviously a homeless person doesn't have as the name homless would imply. Normally I would consider his statements to be knowingly deceitful and misleading so he can lower taxes and act morally superior about it; however given that he's American I genuinely think he's stupid enough to believe this.
I'm not even proposing welfare, I'm just acknowledging the catch 22 of employment and bettering yourself. You gotta spend money to make money but you gotta have money to begin with.
How will that homeless man pay for school in America?
Bootstraps
There's actually a lot of blue collar jobs in America that can earn you six figures with minimal education. The problem is that they're difficult and dirty. This is why so many Western economies have unemployment problems and labor shortages at the same time: nobody wants to do the jobs that are actually available.
Good point though. There's no real good track for the homeless towards employment.
Most of these jobs are construction related and to the extent you're able to make six figures it's only during boom times. Blue collar guys are the ultimate bitches of the economy.
God Boomers are so fucking retarded. If it were that easy everyone in America would be a millionaire but instead most people are living paycheck to paycheck.
What homeless guy doesn't have an alcohol/drug problem or criminal record? Any of those things disqualifies you from a trucking job
Truck drivers are always in demand.
It's just that no one wants to spend hours upon hours out on the road.
They can make up to $100K, most make around $60k
It's in demand...but it is still one of those fields that you have to know someone to get hired into--especially to get hired on by big, well paying company
Take a loan
70k ---- millionaire in 20 years. That's saving 50k a year. Yeah no.
Most people live paycheck to paycheck because they live above their means, not because they don't earn enough. Everybody here is pursuing that millionaire lifestyle on a middle class budget
You CAN survive on 20k a year though. It requires being male, single and living frugally but you can do it.
You can invest and easily double your savings in 20 years
That depends on cost of living, taxes etc.
Few become millionaires through investment.
Welcome to America where if you work long and hard you get rewarded
>Hello yes Bank of America, I would like a loan please. Yes it's for school. Oh collateral or assurances? I own a cardboard box down by the river and 3 socks.
Damn I got a masters degree in MINT and don't make 70k a year. Should have become a blue collar worker in America instead of wasting my time at university.
Blue collar schlub that has not taken home less then 8k a month for years
You can easily make 70-$100k a year working shit tier jobs (bus driver, security, truck driver, transit operator) but most of that money comes from working overtime. If you're willing to work 70-90 hours a week it's not that hard to make bank here.
I'm planning to survive on 9k a year to invest most of my income
No, the median income for truck drivers is $45k, which is barely average in the US, plus truck drivers rely on expensive unhealthy fast food in large parts, the whole sitting around all day thing isn't particularly healthy either, and frankly living in a truck sleeper for weeks at a time is an absolutely garbage life especially if you have family at home.
exactly, I make about 75k a year and after taxes and deductions, I am left with about 53k. (about the same as how much Americans pay in effective taxes) Include mortage or rent, that would be 37 400. And we haven't even gotten to electricity, cellphone, gas for your car, insurance, etc.
I'd rather work sparingly and live a more relaxed, potentially longer life. Tons of people working their asses off just to drop dead at age 67.
I thought the "have contacts to make it big" was a latin america thing only, wtf
And non blue collar workers are not at the mercy of the economy? Blue collar jobs will always be available, can't say the same for office monkeys slaving away for some corporation.
yeah, the industry's having a hell of a time attracting enough younger workers to replace the rapidly aging pool of existing truckers, so there's quite a demand for it now
In some parts of the country, $70K is hardly anything.
Except that blue collar jobs have steadily died off since the advent of automation, then globalization and now digitalization. My workplace is considering buying their first welding robots, and guess whom they're going to replace. Not me. And guess who's going to have to program them. Me.
thats more than a full standard deviation to the right in LA and still above average in new york for median household income, 70k isnt going to be "rich" anywhere in the country but you can live comfortably off 70k anywhere
Some may die off, others will still be as popular. By that logic office monkeys will soon be replaced as well. In any case, office monkeys are even more at mercy to the economy than blue collar jobs.
now its everywhere. Like here we have way less plumbers and electricians than we need but its insanely hard to get into the industry without connections
Yes, and many make more.
I work for a transportation logistics company. Most of our owner-operators make close to or above six figures. However, many are over the road for weeks at a time. Their lifestyle isn't easy. Anyone who wants some semblance of normality shouldn't become a truck driver.
I think it's worth pointing out that many employed drivers--those who don't own their own rigs--can easily earn over $50,000 per year, even with only a year or two of experience. However, drivers are almost always working, even when they're technically not. It's a shit job that has a shortage of workers for a reason.
Basically, a driver who makes $50,000 per year as an employee is probably working 65-70 hours per week. It used to be worse before e-logs became mandatory, as many companies would just pressure their drivers to forge their records to maximize profits.
Your not allowed to smoke marijuana at all.
It tends to pay 25 an hour after but it is a shitty lifestyle.
He's full of shit. Drivers with experience can quit a job and find another within a day. And, more often than not, the companies with the best pay aren't "big" ones.
>be the ideological heir of slaveowners
>hype up these awful blue collar/agricultural jobs that fucking own you and make you bust your ass 80 hours/week to be middle class
>get mad when the only people who actually want to do this are honduran peasants
Thats probably due to unions.
Regardless of whether you're blue or white collar, it's usually one or the other. Either you're at the mercy of how well the economy is doing, or you're at the mercy of how easily you can be replaced by someone slightly cheaper or slightly more motivated, or sometimes both. Very rarely are jobs secure from both recessions and work market competition.
our unions are declining
Most people don't have the potential to become both a responsible and efficient truck driver. Hell, fucking half the population shouldn't even be allowed on the road at all.
Nevermind the long hours and the requisite endurance, it isn't a job for most people on simply they can't do it.
I completely agree with you. Quite a few of our over-the-road employees are legal immigrants from Central Africa and Eastern Europe. They're all, without exception, reliable and hard workers.
However, we've had plenty of problems with American citizens. In fact, all of our American drivers are comparably lazy and unreliable. One lost us a load worth $5,000 because he wound up in jail before pick up.
IME, most people who'd want to become truck drivers have no idea how to handle money.
>However, we've had plenty of problems with American citizens. In fact, all of our American drivers are comparably lazy and unreliable. One lost us a load worth $5,000 because he wound up in jail before pick up.
faggot
they make a ton of money, but they also have to put in 60+ hours a week which to me isn't worth it.
UPS drivers can make a ton of money too, without the 60+ hour weeks but it takes quite a few years to build up to good pay
you can live with your parents
that depends on your definition of comfy. for most people that means owning a house. and with level of income that is only achievable in some flyover states.
I would immediately fire and press legal charges against an employee who lends a significant sum of money to a homeless person.
depends on where you live
in my area, metro-detroit, i could easily live on $20k a year. maybe even $15k
if i replaced my car lease payment with a shitty used car and stopped spending so much money on video games
We are not all Italians
fucking kek. Do you live in Pontiac or another niggerburb?
Imagine how many truckers get cuckolded
Livonia
the absolute cheapest apartments i could find in Livonia, but it's not so bad
>$20k a year. maybe even $15k
holy shit.
Which part of Livonia? My ex used to live there; just moved halfway across the country, though.
kek, hello mammone. we have italian heritage so it is ok
Many trucker jobs have awful hours.
I remember some hip hop song where the rapper says "how do you fill out an application when your return address is a cardboard box"
?
>drivers with job experience can quit a job and find another
No shit you fucking retard. You only confirmed what I was saying: you have to have a hookup to get into it. Once you're already into it, why would you need a hookup to get into it?
fucking brainlette
I don't know about truck drivers, but UPS delivery drivers make very good money.
Being homeless in any nation considered first world is a CHOICE.
>first world
USA isn't first world
>Be blue collar factory worker
>Rich kikes send all your jobs to china
>Have no skills and at the age of 50 nobody will hire you
>Kike then comes to take your house after he shipped your job overseas
HURR DURR IT'S A CHOICE!
the united states has unironically regressed to developing world
it is you moron, you faggots just cant apprectiate raw capitalism enough anymore to capitalise on it.
So you're homeless, maybe indepted but still an american citizen. I think there still ways for you to work back your way into society.
They just require you to work your ass off
>be foreigner
>have no skills
>be homeless in america
go back to your country?!
Nothing I said was about immigrants but leave it to a kraut to make it about them. Has Ahmed really fucked you so hard you've forgotten that white people exist?
You can't even apply for a job without a permanent address lmao.
>This is why so many Western economies have unemployment problems and labor shortages at the same time: nobody wants to do the jobs that are actually available.
Then, according to Muh Free Market the prices of said undesirable jobs should rise until someone takes them.
But that involves actually believing in Da Free Market which American conservatives and Australian Liberals consistently fail to do despite their platforms espousing it.
>instead irl they get offshored or immigrants are roped in
Fucking neoliberal/neocon libertarians shits are on the brink of imploding, hope they're able to bootstrap themselves when their out on their arses. After all, no excuses.
>t. A "friend" who swallowed this way of thinking, I watched his life implode and no one helped him because "bootstraps/nohandouts/noexcuses/literallyjustmakemoremoney/lmaojustcutspending/rofljustmovetwohoursawayfromyourjob/stopyourentitlement"
>felt sorry for his kid though, she didn't understand why daddy's decisions were fucking up her life
>They just require you to work your ass off
This "Hustle" mentality is toxic and is making worker's quality of life and job go backwards.
>Huuurr we keep taking stuff
>Stop complaining
>Derrr just work even harder
People will be proles treading water and thinking "this is life" if we don't stop this insidious bullshit.
sucking dick
>Being poor in America is a personal choice
>most people born into poverty will die in poverty
What did he mean by this?
70k can't buy a house in LA.
Not even that, at $70K hes bringing in $45K at most after taxes. He could maybe save $25K-$30K a year if he was a super cheap bastard. Were talking about sharing a room with crack addicts or sleeping in a car levels of cheap though.
>become a millionaire
>if you count all the money you had to spend on actually LIVING because you only had about 50k after taxes anyways
>so not actually anywhere close to a millionaire
>humans will be driving trucks in 20 years
Hahahahahahhahahaha
Few become millionaires by any method.
DUDE
I haven't met a lot of teachers or doctors that are regularly unemployed for months at a time. I would never recommend that somebody bank on being another useless wage slave but white collar jobs with licensing requirements are more dependable than anything blue collar (except maybe cop/firefighter/nurse).
Yes.
Especially during the past few years, the USA has been experiencing one of its worst worker shortages ever in the trucking industry.
It's having a pretty big impact on logistics and operations managment departments for companies.
Blue collar jobs in general have a shortage of workers. They're not seen as sexy or "good" jobs by entitled whites getting libarts degrees so they're not getting filled.
Only the working class should be shammed when they indulge themselves on frivolities like good housing and decent healthcare.
>I thought the "have contacts to make it big" was a latin america thing only, wtf
Not at all, try getting into any position in the civil service if you don't know someone already in a government office, shit's fucking impossible
more like american cuck drivers, amirite, LMAO
there are literally no problems with this
>Rep.
>chose
Can't they at least get someone to proof read his cancerous garbage?
lmao
It's more due to most people only hiring family members or close friends. You basically have to start your own business for reliable work as a tradie unless you live in the outer suburbs of a city or anywhere near a capital.
Most small businesses go under, though.
>One lost us a load worth $5,000 because he wound up in jail before pick up.
Fucking lmao.
Yeah man, also fucking millenials, if they worked hard and didn't spend money on frivolous shit like avocado toast they could buy a house at 22 like I did back in 1974
the life of a trucker:
>always on the road, away from friends/family for weeks at a time
>getting addicted to wake up pills is mandatory
>depression and suicide are frequent
>have to stare at boring empty road for hours on end
>if youve never actually done this, just fire up ETS2 and set it too the longest routes, see how long it stays fun
Truck drivers in Japan earn as much too.
Unlike the American counterpart, you can return home every few days to see the faces of your family as Japan is such a compact country with well developed well paved road network.
Just don't be a mail/ small package delivery man on a motorbike or a tiny van, you are lucky if you earn half as much.
sure, learn to become a truck driver, future will need lots of truck drivers
