They told me the Catalan independence movement wasn't just moved by the interest of the local rich elite, but mainly by the dseire of the common people to break with the EU and the transnational elites since Podemos is mildly social democratic and compromised with the national government at this point. They actually don't. Historically a lot of these areas spoke Low Franconian (basically Dutch). It was only during the early 20th century did the German government atempt to stamp out the local language. Even painters from Kleves are considered Dutch painters
