East Slavs never spoke Swedish
>Swedish
why do you insult us in such ways and expect answers , attila?
btw, they spoke Old East Slavic and Old Church Slavonic
We got Church Slavonic language which is generic for Orthodox Christian rituals and old Bibles. It was invented in old times to unify texts. As I heard the most close to it among modern languages is Slovenian, so the closest to Ancient Slavic language is somewhere there, near/on Balkans.
The East Slavic elite spoke Swedish while the East Slavic underclass spoke various Slavic and Finnic languages
They spoke subhumanish language just like modern slav(e)shit subhumans.
>East Slavic underclass
>Finnic languages
I thought it was most similar to Bulgarian and Serbo-Croat?
Yes, because many East Slavs were/are Finnics in denial
>The East Slavic elite spoke Swedish
Loled, it's even unclear, who was Rurik, so it is unknown which was his native language, but anyway, even tho it wasn't Slavic, his kids spoke Slavic.
He probably means that Finno-ogres were plebs ruled by Russians. Do you know that shitton of Eestis, known as Chud at those times, died during Battle on the Ice. They were fighting on both sides.
>Serbo-Croat
This should be very close to Ancient Slavic, yes
Not realy, varangians formed part of elite, thats true, but majority of kievan rus elite was slavic, also varangians assimilated very quicly, and they starter speaking old church slavonic
The East Slavoids were still conquered and ruled by Swedes and it took like a century for them to fully assimilate anyway.
>inb4 they were invited so technically Slavs weren't conquered
>and they starter speaking old church slavonic
Lmao, old church slavonic was the literally language for used for documenting state/religious matters, it wasn't a spoken language. They spoke Old East Slavic.
Yup, they were ruled by (most likely) Swedes, but elite wasnt only Swedish, majority of elite was Slavic. And Varangians assimilated very quicly, even when they arrived, they started to worship Perun instead of Thor, becouse they considered him to be more powerful god
Sorry, my bad, i meant old East slavic
The Jarls and Rurik henchmen surly spoke Swedish. Probably many Slavs learnd a bit of Swedish to speak with their Rus overlords (and vica versa). Of course eventually Rus people were assimilated by the Slavs.
?
Ah, yeah, I clearly remember that paragraph in our school history book telling about the tribal elites of Nogvorod learning Old Norse on Duolingo. That's exactly how it worked in the early medieval time, mate, you're absolutely right.
>people didn't learn languages before duolingo
Do you know how they taught translators back then? They sent them to the destination country when they were kids so they would be growing up listening to native speaker's speech. None of them even knew how to write.
Only the actual royals and some nobles would have been Swedes, rest were Slavs and probably spoke some proto-Slavic language
