Is 話 always "story"? It seems more like "that was the case" in this context, how do native Japanese speakers tend to read it?

I have just come back from a couple of weeks in Japan, and I feel like I can't dekinai
This time I definitely understood a lot more, and being able to read some kanji was pretty useful. But how the fuck am I supposed to actually speak japanese? I'd get a 一人? when getting a ticket somewhere, and my brain just auto responds with "yes". It was a real struggle to not just respond in English to everything (especially since I rarely had any communication issues this way, although opportunities were limited).
