I don't think it would be wise to start learning a language only because of GDP rankings...especially non European languages.

Also Chinese is 12.5% (let's say I believe the ranking) but you have to consider the following
-time/resources needed to learn Chinese
-the Chinese working market for non chinese
-high numbers of Chinese people learning english and other important european languages, the proficiency Chinese diaspora in one or two more languages
-Chinese working ethics and workplace culture

In my opinion Japanese would still be a better choice because the country is smaller, wealthier and few Japanese know how to speak in good english/other european languages

Of course you could learn portuguese and have more job opportunities than the average chinese expert

I learned Chinese to B1 level, and i never really use it except on holiday. Bad investment all around. Especially when you realize you could have learned 3 european languages in the meantime.
