the revolution was started by the bourgeoisie and even nobles who wanted to end royal absolutism, they wanted a constitutional monarchy to have a say in it and to not lose money because the king decided all by himself.

the king agreed to that change, we even held a party for it, that party in actually the french national day, not the storming of the bastille for muh guns.

the king didn't keep his promise, the king tried to fled france, wanted the foreign monarchies to intervene in France ALLEGEDLY I say allegedly because we will never know for sure if he hasn't been framed and that is was an inside job made by extremist revolutionnaries who didn't want royalty anyway.

France being at war there was no room to allow a civil war to weaken it that would have helped the foreign armies so any threat inside of france towards the republic was dealt with.
