I think a lot of it is American influence. I guess to Americans it's obvious what parts of their own popular culture are extremely lower-class and trashy. We may speak the same language but it's harder for people to tell here. So a big portion of the population, who really should know better (and would, I presume, know better if they were Americans of analogous social position), accept American influence uncritically and wind up mimicking the trashiest, nastiest, most disgusting parts of American society that are incessantly promoted in film, on television, in magazines, and now more than ever on the internet. I think the same thing happens in England and Europe, but maybe due to longer-established local cultures, more foreign neighbours, and language barriers, the effect is less pronounced.
