So according to people Tim Horton's had good coffee back in the day, but for whatever reason they switched coffee bean suppliers and the quality declined. McDonalds came in with coffee people thought was shit, and picked up the previous Tim Horton's supplier. Suddenly everyone's tastes switched and people sing praises about how good McDonalds is versus Tim Horton's. I've seen no proof for this and I think both companies deny this happened, but I hear it so often from people and the internet.
