I don't see any country contesting China, so they'll probably get their autonomy eroded over a period of 20 years, little by little. No slaughtering of civilians or anything that could disgruntle the population, but they'll eventually wake up one day and realize that Beijing is holding the leash. They don't need to, really.

Chinese have a very "hands off" approach to politics, they are indifferent to the idea of trying to change the system and mostly concerned with improving their material well being. Even Communist part sceptics tow the party line on most subjects (western power but in too much, we wouldn't be arresting Uyghurs if there wasn't a problem in the first place etc.) In other words, complacent, consumerists in a system that dis-incentivizes active political participation. People often even attack dissidents for "rocking the boat" and "making problems" for everybody else. Problems like corruption and misuse of power are always pawned off on low level party officials, never as a critical look at the system as a whole. Protests against officials, or government policy are aimed at the bottom, with the participants still supporting the government in Beijing.

Thanks! But as an earlier poster stated, why would they complain? To the average Chinese family, their income has exploded, their standard of living is unimaginable compared to 20-30 years ago, literacy rates, wages, are all up, poverty and disease have mostly been eliminated. Why trade this stability away? Stability is the key continuity in Chinese society, why try to upset the current balance. Money is king, it's the one aspect that everybody can try to reach for, particularly after the Cultural revolution, where traditional social and religious institutions were dismantled, the value you can generate your family is the considered the pinnacle of your worth.

2. The country is at its wealthiest (as compared to the rest of the world) since the 1600s
3. The country is more secure and stable in centuries.

I've traveled to China and I think the one thing that got me is for the most part people who are not your immediate friends or family are basically worth nothing to them.. it's like the entire big city culture but it's so much more pronounced and everywhere.

Like even if they had free press and the ability to protest I can't see it being a part of the culture there. Like in the West if something egregious happens (cop shoots someone, someone gets off on a crime, etc) people generally have empathy and anger at the result where in China it's "Well that's not us so I don't care'.

The country is experiencing economic growth but it's also polarising in effect, creating the very rich and the very poor.
There's many issues from bachelor villages to judges being controlled by the executive branch and the reeducation camps for some muslim minority which i know (exckdei gas all mudzlimez), but still, consider that this is happening at this time.
