FAQ: >How do I learn a language? What is the best way to learn one? How should I improve on certain aspects? Ideally take a class, otherwise buy (torrent) a well-received textbook for your language, google any grammar you have trouble with and no matter what do lots of translation exercises but post an apu if you actually read this but I doubt it >Will I learn a language by using Duolingo five minutes a day while taking a shit No >I'm going to use Duolingo anyway If on your phone, use the mobile site and NOT the app; the latter lacks many important features and doesn't let you turn the word bank off which should always be off. In addition don't copy-paste or memorize answers for the sake of completing lessons, and as above, google anything you don't understand >Should I learn X to get a qt wife/gf (male) etc? No >Should I learn lang Y so I can learn lang X? No
>What language should I learn Austrian >I just want something easy and somewhat useful Chinese >I want a language that's useful and fun but not too hard Mexican >I want a language that's useful and embrace a challenge Swiss
how do you say "I'm a total fucking waste of oxygen that contributes nothing to Jow Forums by posting about gay boys and whining for a girlfriend to other users of this site" in your target language?

What's the coolest/most interesting thing you've been able to do with your target language? Could be as simple as reading a book or something more.
I understood it when an enemy in Wolfenstein called me a "Wixxer"
Levi Cox
Sort of understanding things in other, related languages that I never studied. German: Dutch/Luxembourgish Swedish: Norwegian/Danish/spoken Icelandic once Russian: Slavshit in general (still takes forever to figure out since I have to sound words out. Since you remember "shapes" of words it ends up being a problem across alphabets)
Nolan Davis
Anyone here have any success with the Michael Thomas method? I'm studying French and German.
my wife chino... I WANT TO FUCK CHINO please chino is so cute my wife chino is so cute chino chan sex chino sex with chino i'd like some more kafuu chino sex with chino kafuu chino my wife cute is so chino wife
Was able to travel to Germany and express myself in German, ask for directions, or food and have meaningful conversations with people about their life. It was an awesome feeling, because the first time I went to Germany I had tourist tier knowledge of German.
Funny how when I started my goal in learning german was just to be able to say and understand basic sentences.
I want to do the same now with French
Zachary Bailey
how do you say I want to sniff chino chan and cuddle her and hold her?

(the second part of the sentence makes no sense but ok) "Willem Alexander is of een van de slechste koningen ooit, of niet" zou zij zeggen na dat de olifant de rug van de kameel braak >One day, I will create a giant tower of light, and send the guards to eliminate anyone who is in my way. Geef mij geen excuses, je was te laat met het inleveren van je paper. Also waarom ik iets om je kleine " toneekstuk" zou moeten geven. Is also possible. >De man met een gouden speer wachte in het verlaten kerker, wensend dat hij een zwarte toren in plaats daarvan gekocht had Wachtte. The last part is not wrong but reads clunky (to me), see pic. >"Willem Alexander is of een van de slechste koningen ooit, of [juist] niet" zou zij [moeten] zeggen nadat de olifant de rug van de kameel brak* Brak* >Ooit zal ik een gigantische licht-toren bouwen, en ik zal de bewakers sturen om iedereen die mij in de weg staat te verwijderen (? it implies to kill/destroy) en zal ik (?) bewakers sturen om iedereen die mij in de weg staat te verwijderen/ uit de weg te ruimen. Not sure about the inversion in the second clause, both sound good to me. I would just omit ik in the second clause all together.

Like nigga i just want to say "put the book on your head" should I used, legen, setzen, stellen? why do you have to have so many fucking words for "put"?
why did my first language have to be a brainlet language?
learn one useful language and one language that youre very interested in.
a useful lang isnt always neccessarily the most spoken language in the world, but it could be a langauge in a very improtant geopolitcal part of the world like arabic, or persian , or russian

how can i stop feeling like all languages besides english are useless? i want to learn german and swedish but dont think they would be useful in any situation.
Cooper Jenkins
>gendered articles >assigning genders to inanimate objects what is this retarded shit
James Moore
y'know, I had to make a proper conscious effort not to get upset at this desu
what's "useful" ? but more importantly: why do they need to be "useful"? in all likelihood, in your situation, they aren't just like knowing why the sky is blue isn't all that "useful" but I still want to know
>what is this retarded shit leftover from a time when people couldn't think in more obviously different categories than genders otherwise they would've assigned them other group names, or numbers or whatever it's just a way to refer to the groups that stuff belongs to, it never actually had anything to do with _actual_ genders ...which is proof that gender is a social construct actually
>legen -> liegen put something somewhere in a lying position, like a carpet or a newspaper >stellen -> stehen put something somewhere in an upright position, like a cupboard >setzen -> sitzen put something somewhere in a sitting position, or put it on top of something else (this one is a little more abstract than the others when not used for people)
In your example, you would use either legen or setzen, and both would be fine.
Just call them category 1, 2 and 3 nouns if it triggers you so much.

thats a really cool way to remember them thanks. what objects would you use fro setzen? I can only think of Ich setze das kind auf den stuhl

is there some proper scientific reason why some people (I've only heard anglos really) say "nuchilar" instead of "nuclear"?
f'gettaboutit
>issues with audio on new ubuntu >think i fix'd it >must test >somehow the first thing is a lithuanian university radio >mfew
>what objects would you use fro setzen? I can only think of Ich setze das kind auf den stuhl The most common use is obviously for people (or animals) sitting down. Use it with a reflexive pronoun if it's someone who sits down himself. >Der Mann setzt das kleine Kind auf das Sofa. Dann setzt er sich daneben. I can't really think of any objects that are comonly used with "setzen" right now, but I'm pretty sure there are at leasta few. "Stellen" and "legen" are really much more common here.
As said, you would probably use some phrasing with "eher": >Deutschland? Wohl eher SCHWUL VIEL lol
StartFM -94.2MHz, Vilnius University, Lithuania startfm.lt/
it was in Rhythmbox and I just picked an online radio at random to see if muh audio was working (it does but headphones still don't)
I would but literally all my Finnish friends speak Swedish ...do you speak Swedish user? do you speak Finnish? can I stay with you for a week or so this summer? :3
Aha, I never used Rythymbox's radio function before. >tfw you haven’t touched your Linux partition in who knows how long Don’t dual boot, kids. Go all the way in.

>Don’t dual boot, kids. In German, should "hr" (like in sehr for example) be read as "ha" or "h-a"?
Kevin Peterson
the H always elongates the sound of the letter it precedes. so the R at the end of german words often sound like the british R at the end of the word that isnt really pronuounced.
i pronunce sehr like se-ahr

What is your goal in your target language bros?
Me, I want to be able to converse in French and be able to travel to france and talk to everyone in french, so at least a low B2 by 2020

Gavin Cox
>'Vocabulaire' sounds a bit posh it's the only word I've ever known for this but now I will _definitely_ use it if I can sound like a smart-ass!
I can't for the life of me remember how I ended up on the guy's channel; I think I was casually googling something to do with recensie or so, and I wanted to see if he was a normie or just an average handsome dutch dude who talks about books and turns out he does a very nice and comfy job of it and I can't even hate him even though he's attractive dus
I'd love to be able to actually talk and have proper conversations in Dutch but I doubt that's gonna happen any time soon, at least not at this rate it's not like I'm busting my ass working on it either
Wyatt Thompson
So I assume you dont really talk to native dutch people a lot? maybe you should spend less time on Jow Forums and more time studying dutch or practice talking big dawg,i see you here all the time

I'm glad you enjoy it, because it's frustrating for me, I can't understand a word
> ??????????? > Oh Mann, in dem Keller. Und hoffe ??????? du rennst ???? > Du, lauf schneller! > ???????? kann schneller. > Lauf ????????? ab > ???????????? gleichfalls.
Landon Nguyen
>I assume you dont really talk to native dutch people a lot? m8 I am quite literally surrounded by them every single day and most speak Dutch to me I speak like 20-80 Dutch-English back, in writing that is also improving bit by bit, but irl it really gets awkward real fast if you make too many mistakes, gets in the way of actual discussion, and I dislike that I'm here so much because it's a lot easier to write in Dutch here than irl, and it's helped me a whole bunch, especially with confidence before the naturalization exams
so then I started feeling bad about the thread dying and now I try to keep it alive as much as I can without shitposting, while also posting in Dutch whenever I can, since the nice local toothpastes always correct my stupid mistakes and they give very good feedback and extra info (and imo it's way better practice than just doing challenges) and no, posting in /nederdraad/ is not an option, believe me I've tried
How else will I welcome my new overlords. jk, would like to read Shahnameh, and Persian sounds cool
