France has a 9.3% unemployment rate, is spending hundreds of millions on new refugees, already has well above average fuel prices for Europe (more expensive than 36 other Euro countries), and the current leader's approval rate is quite low. This was not the best time to introduce a tax hike.
Yes, in this case America is bad and the French pushing back against a fuel tax doesn't negate that, it just means the current French government did the right thing at the wrong time.
