From my understanding it is a lot of reasources that are mostly uneconomical to extract due to conditions. Multiple feet of snow for half the year, loots of (possibly shifting) rivers and streams, unstable wetlands, and low quality soils that make agriculture very inefficient. To get people up there in meaningful numbers you have to ship in food and materials because local production is relatively non existent. Shipping in supplies is difficult/expensive because infrastructure is extremely under developed.

Honestly it sounds a lot like pre investment Alaska but without the benefit of a relatively large amount of coastline in proportion to landmass to facilitate shipping. I suspect some areas will see a "boom" in the medium near future in much the same way as the region's around Anchorage. Which is exciting because unless we find a way to transform the arctic/Antarctic into a useable land mass this is likely the last physical resource based land boom we will see. If I was a ruskie I would be moving out there and investing in land right now because once the ball starts rolling it will be hard to stop.

Guilty as charged. My training is in soils not Russian culture/politics. What exactly should I know about Russia to form a different opinion on the far east? Push come to shove it will become more developed over time, which will make it economically feasible to extract reasources which are not currently profitable, which will increase the demand for workers and improve infrastructure, which will in turn cause land prices to rise. This is certain, the only variable is the time frame that it all happens on.
