Some people say that tumblr has to do it or risk getting in hot water because of CP on their site, but from what I've heard the staff just made the decision because they didn't feel like doing their job and moderating the site. The company's filters and ways of finding illegal content are apparently behind industry standards too.

Yeah that's a big part of it. I'm pretty sure that mods not doing their job was only one factor, and Apple, Verizon, and various advertisers are glad to purge so much porn.
