/Lang/ is currently short on those image qts, so if you can pitch in to help create one for a given language, don't hesitate to read the OP; nobody embeds anyway and I just want to say I don't hate that chino faggot all that much anymore pass!
FAQ: >How do I learn a language? What is the best way to learn one? How should I improve on certain aspects? Ideally take a class, otherwise buy (torrent) a well-received textbook for your language, google any grammar you have trouble with and no matter what do lots of translation exercises >Will I learn a language by using Duolingo five minutes a day while taking a shit No >I'm going to use Duolingo anyway If on your phone, use the mobile site and NOT the app; the latter lacks many important features and doesn't let you turn the word bank off which should always be off. In addition don't copy-paste or memorize answers for the sake of completing lessons, and as above, google anything you don't understand >Should I learn X to get a qt wife/gf (male) etc? No >Should I learn lang Y so I can learn lang X? No
>What language should I learn Swedish >I just want something easy and somewhat useful Svedski >I want a language that's useful and fun but not too hard Svenska >I want a language that's useful and embrace a challenge Sænska
Do the Saami still have their own language? Assume so but never hear about it. Are they fully linguistially integrated? Doubt it.

Kuinka sanotaan suomeksi "not learning Finnish" ?

>Do the Saami still have their own language? Yes. There are various variants too depending on area and country. They are quite ethnocentric and segregated actually.

How do I work on my listening skills? I try watching nature documentaries and such, but I feel like I'm just running into a wall. Is there a way to listen 'better'? (I'm trying to learn French if that makes a difference)

The wall is the point desu. How would it even work without a wall.

Will go back to learning Turkish for no apparent reason.

Took 2 years of Spanish in high school and can understand most basic conversations but still struggle with speaking it. I've been thinking of trying to read some Spanish books, something simple, in my spare time to hone my reading comprehension and think more in Spanish. It would be good for career desu
Anyone have recs for easy to read Spanish books?

urinonically by speaking it french with someone, I've had that plateu with german but I realized passive listening is really shit for improving your language skills , you have to do "active listening" which involved listening carefully

how in the world are you suppose to memorize all of these conjugation tables?
Practice. People really don't understand that that's how you learn languages
Xavier Morris
is it more efficient to focus on the charts specifically, or continue with translations until the proper conjugation forms gradually come naturally? Verb ending flash cards are rather boring to me......
Xavier Mitchell
Try to conjugate things, reference a chart if you absolutely have no clue, check if your right, repeat

what do you guys think is the optimal number of words/sentences to learn each day for starting out in a language, and what's the best way to go about collecting the most useful sentences to know?
Eli Hernandez
Is duolingo any good for russian or should I just use the books in OP? Olla oppimatta suomea. Post one and I'll make up a memorization rules for you.
Jaxson Nelson
ok but what if you're using duolingo for hours a day? t. dumb ameriburger
Oliver Bailey
>Olla oppimatta suomea. Kiitos vastauksestasi.
The -tta ending is new to me (Google says "without"?), but I guess I'll learn that soon enough.
>Is duolingo any good for russian or should I just use the books in OP? Not sure about Russian for Duolingo, but I think "The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners" is considered one of the best books for learning Russian. I bought it a while back and it was very thorough.
Maybe 5-10 words a day as beginner? Get sentences from books you read, or if you're a true beginner, probably from the grammar book you are using. Just use their example sentences for learning.

Duolingo is TOO EASY. Even for (you). Duolingo is something you do whilst shitting, while you spend hours intensively reading.

Actually scratch that, the correct answer to you question would be:
>ei opetele suomea
Sorry it’s well past 3AM here. What I initially said carries a slight connotation and isn’t the “formula”, if you like, you’d use on Finnish imageboards. I can explain the grammar behind my initial answer. The "-tta" suffix is called the abessive case. When used with nouns it translates to "without" and can be used interchangeably with the word "ilman". They are used equally often.
F: Lähdetkö ulos ilman takkia (note, partitive is followed after ilman) E: Are going to leave without a jacket?
The equivalent of the above using the aforementioned case would be: Lähdetkö ulos takitta?
When it comes to verbs it can be used in the following ways:
1. Olla tekemättä – To not do something
This is generally used along some other verb such intend to (aikoa), plan on (suunnitella), try to (yrittää) etc. Example:
F: Aiotko oikeasti olla tekemättä mitään koko viikonlopun? E: Do really intend to not do anything the whole weekend?
2. Jättää tekemättä - To leave something undone
Example:
F: Jätitkö läksyt taas tekemättä? E: Did you not do (lit. leave undone) your homework again?
3. Tekemättä - Without doing
Whenever a verb is conjugated in the abessive form by itself it would "without [insert verb]-ing". It is a shorter version of “ilman, että tekee” and can be used interchangeably with it just as was the case with nouns. However unlike with nouns the abessive form is more common when it comes to verbs as it is much shorter and roles easier off the tongue.
Example:
F: Hän väittää saapuneensa tänne kävelemättä askeltakaan. E: He claims to have arrived here without taking (lit. walking) a step.
Also some finnanon should recheck what I’ve just said in keis öf brainfaart.
Josiah Carter
>continue with translations until the proper conjugation forms gradually come naturally? Redditors hate him! Click here to find out this one weird trick used in practically every other topic of study on the planet, called read the damn textbook. Bookwork is natural learning, it's just targeted natural learning. Just do the grind first and when you see them naturally you'll already know what they are! I really hate how people treat languages like freaky voodoo magic nowadays. Yes there are nuances to usage of concepts and there are irregularities but that doesn't mean we should just toss textbooks and charts in the garbage.
hi how do you translate to finnish? my wife chino... I WANT TO FUCK CHINO please chino is so cute my wife chino is so cute chino chan sex chino sex with chino i'd like some more kafuu chino sex with chino kafuu chino my wife cute is so chino wife

does anyone have transcripts for pimsleur french 1?
Alexander Collins
I finished the Spanish Tree (before the great tree reformation) with a whopping total unique word count of around 2,600 and I still felt that my Spanish level was sub A-0. The same goes for Pimsleur which I've completed twice, and even my 1000 card conjugation Anki deck + 5k card vocab deck to some degree. It wasn't till I started intensively reading with LWT that I felt I made any progress at all. But everyone is different so idk spend your life doing Duolingo if you want.
>Perfectly content with what I'm learning as a second language >Keep flipflopping back and forth between a third and whether I even want to commit to either

Took a class after self-teaching for a while, would continue if the professor didn't quit and the other languages I was learning were available
Angel Davis
can you describe the materials and what content it dealt with? did you enjoy conversing with other german learners?
Brandon Scott
I mean it was basically a textbook, workbook and exercises. The professor keeping you on track and simply actually going to the fucking class is a huge motivational boost however, they also know what in the book is useless and not. As for classmates, they were braindead twats who only took it as a degree requirement not realizing Spanish was a far easier option
(I never said I was learning German but you were right anyway)

lmao seems like my listening comprehension is pretty weak
Asher Campbell
Why do Turks never use punctuation online? It's always run-on sentences.
Don't be too hard on yourself, kurwanon. I mean, you did hear the word stem of "Pleite" correctly, and it's pretty understandable that you wouldn't get "Rendezvous" when listening for German words.
