I don't care what your stance on immigration and asylum seekers is lads, but RTÉ's reporting on the opening of new Direct Provision centres in rural towns across the country is ridiculously biased. At the start of the report on the radio this evening they mentioned that there had been strong local opposition to many new centres, so I thought that they might be discussing that aspect as part of the report. But then they spent the entire 10-15 minutes talking only with centre residents and members of the community who are active in the centres. The only points of view covered were those sympathetic to the centre and its residents, and those highlighting that the centres aren't good enough.

I'd be surprised, but it's been evident for years that immigration is a theme on which RTÉ is notoriously biased. I'm not even opposed to legal migration myself, but I'd expect the national broadcaster to be a bit more impartial on the issue.

Even some of the residents were saying that the centres should be in cities. I get the impression that both the residents and potentially the local communities suffer from the these centres being located in rural areas. But according to the department responsible, they are only locating the centres in accordance with where suitable sites become available, which seems to be invariably in rural towns and villages.
